The Best Gun in the World

A good article for those pondering buying a new handgun.

CZ P-01 or G19 for handgun, AK-47 or FN FAL for rifle.

Looks like an article written just to boost about his choice of handgun. I fail to see why the Ruger SP101 is the "best" handgun out there.

I don't think there is a single best handgun As what is best for SD isn't the best for survival or hunting. You also have to take into account the difference in people and their physical capabilities.

The "best" gun is the one you shoot the best and serves your needs.

The Ruger SP-101 is a fantastic revolver but it is not the "best gun in the world". Absintheur is correct, that is a question left up to each individual person and what they need it for.

I think he states it all in his first sentence.

I think the author is alone in his choice of "The Best Gun In The World."

I agree. The first sentence was "The best gun in the world is the one you’ll have with you when you need it." He went on to enumerate some things that are a bad traits for a potential buyer, then some things that a person should look for.

He stated that he thought the best fit for him was the SP-101.

The part I wanted to show that was important was everything before.....

It would be a very special gun that had none of the drawbacks and all of the advantages listed above.

A .357 Magnum revolver with a four inch barrel is one of the most versatile firearms you can own. That much is true. It is suitable for hunting, defense and recreational use. If you can conceal any full size handgun you can conceal the four inch .357. It can chamber and fire the ubiquitous .38 Special for cheaper plinking or for a reduced power load. Some people take the middle road and load theirs with .38+P. The .357 itself was designed as a hunting round and has taken just about everything in North America but the trouble is that most ammo is now being made with short barrels and alloy frames in mind. It's hard to find full strength .357 Magnum loads unless you make them yourself. The availability of .357 Magnum carbines and the significant velocity boost a carbine length barrel gets you makes for a useful side arm/long arm duo that can share ammo.

The downside as with all revolvers is capacity which is compounded by the reload time. It's a bad idea to center your defensive strategy around the idea of only needing to fire 2.6 shots. Most defensive uses of a firearm don't involve more than the presentation of the weapon so my guess is that statistic is heavily impacted by events where no rounds were fired. I haven't heard of many actual defensive shootings where the full capacity of the pistol was not utilized. Given the realities of stopping power and accuracy under stress you'd be crazy to stop shooting before you ran out of ammo.

Such a revolver is still a good choice if you have only one gun. It's not the best gun in the world, but no gun is. The 9x23 Winchester comes really close though.

I have a Ruger Security-Six .357 magnum with a 4" barrel, which was made before the SP-101. Once back in 1998 I fired a round without hearing protection. My ears haven't stopped ringing yet.

Why a 357 Magnum? A 14" barrel would be appropriate for this caliber.

In a different article the same author recommends the Glock 23 .40 S&W over the Ruger SP-101, for people who are more experienced with firearms.
